Why American Oak?
We’ve been building American Oak staircases, balustrades and handrails for over a decade, and it’s still one of the most requested timbers we work with. It has a strong, open grain, and it takes stain far better than most. Where a lot of timbers blotch or make an even colour hard to reach, American Oak finishes cleanly, from a pale natural look through to something dark and rich.
It also comes two ways, so you can match it to the job and the budget. Solid American Oak hardwood can be sanded back and refinished three to five times over its life. American Oak overlay is a real oak veneer over a stable engineered core: lighter, holds its shape, and costs less. Both are real American Oak, manufactured in Australia and distributed nationally, and both finished to the same standard. Which one suits comes down to the project.

Frequently asked questions about American Oak.
The overlay is a real oak surface laid over a solid engineered MDF core. You get the same oak look as solid timber, in a lighter build that costs less. The hardwood is solid timber the whole way through, so it’s the premium option, and it can be sanded back and refinished several times over its life where the overlay can’t.
Yes. The overlay is a real layer of American Oak over an MDF core, so the surface you see and touch is oak, with the same grain and the same stain options as solid timber. It isn’t a printed or laminate lookalike. The core underneath just keeps it stable and brings the cost down.
It depends on the build. Solid American Oak hardwood can be sanded right back and refinished three to five times over its life, so the staircase can be brought back to new decades later. The overlay can’t be sanded back the same way, since the oak surface is a thin real layer over the core. You can still refresh it with a clean and a new coat of finish, but if being able to fully resand it matters to you, go with solid.
Yes. American Oak takes stain evenly where a lot of timbers blotch, so it’s straightforward for your painter or finisher to match it to the floor, or take it lighter or darker. We supply the staircase ready to finish, and both overlay and solid have a real oak surface, so they take colour the same way. The staining and sealing is done on site by your finisher.
Yes. We’ve got a range of American Oak balusters and handrails in different profiles to suit your design, along with matching posts, so the same oak can run through the whole balustrade and rail, not just the stairs.
It comes down to the staircase. The main things that move the price are the design and size, which build you go with, and how much of it is done in oak. Solid hardwood costs more than overlay, and a full balustrade with turned posts and balusters costs more than a staircase between two walls.
